Plan a Maui day

Road to Hāna, built around the parts you cannot wing.

Pick the day shape first, then let the fixed gates decide the route: road status, rain, Waiʻānapanapa reservations, ocean conditions, daylight, and where to eat without losing the day.

Choose the day shape

The right Road to Hāna plan depends on what you are willing to skip.

These are not ranked itineraries. They are different ways to protect the day from the usual failure modes: leaving late, missing a reservation window, overcommitting to waterfalls, or adding Kīpahulu after everyone is already tired.

Leave Kahului by 7:00 AM / Balanced pace

Classic full day

Anchor the day around Waiʻānapanapa, keep the middle flexible, eat in Hāna, and turn around before fatigue makes the return drive sloppy.

Food plan: Coffee or breakfast in Kahului, snack in Keʻanae if open, then choose Hāna town trucks for lunch.

  1. 1

    Kahului launch

    food

    Kahului / Before 7:30 AM / 20-35 min

Start with coffee, water, and a real breakfast before the road narrows beyond the north shore.

This is the easiest place to fuel the car and choose from a deep food-truck cluster before the drive gets slower.

Skip if late: If you are already behind, grab only coffee and water.

  2. 2

    Pāʻia or Haʻikū food stop

    food

    Paia / Haiku / 7:30-9:30 AM / 15-45 min

Use the north-shore towns as the last easy food decision before waterfalls, short walks, and slow bridges.

The repo catalog already has route-town trucks in Pāʻia and Haʻikū, plus Haʻikū Marketplace options that work well before or after the drive.

Skip if late: Skip lingering in town if your Waiʻānapanapa reservation window is early.

  3. 3

    Twin Falls

    hike

    Haiku / Early morning / 30-75 min

A managed farm/waterfall stop with limited paid parking and no reservations.

It is one of the first waterfall walks after Pāʻia, so it fits families and first-timers when parking is available.

Conditions: Follow the operator's weather and trail-closure updates; high water changes the plan.

Skip if late: Skip if the lot is full, rain is active, or you have a fixed Waiʻānapanapa slot.

  4. 4

    Kaumahina State Wayside

    view

    Haiku / Mid-morning / 10-20 min

A free daylight-hours state wayside with picnicking, restrooms, and northeast Maui coastline views.

It is a low-commitment reset stop when the car needs a break more than the schedule needs another hike.

Skip if late: Skip if you already stopped at Twin Falls or need to protect a reservation window.

    Sources: Kaumahina State Wayside

  5. 5

    Keʻanae banana bread detour

    roadside

    Keanae / Before lunch / 20-35 min

A short detour for coastal views and Aunty Sandy's, which posts Monday-Saturday daytime hours and warns that bread can sell out.

It breaks up the middle of the drive with a real stretch stop and a food memory that is not another sit-down meal.

Skip if late: Skip on Sundays, major holidays, or whenever timing is tight.

    Sources: Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread

  6. 6

    Puaʻa Kaʻa State Wayside

    view

    Nahiku / Midday / 15-35 min

A free daylight-hours state wayside in rainforest with picnic space, restrooms, small waterfalls, and pools.

It is one of the better practical stops when you need restrooms and a short nature break in the wet middle of the route.

Conditions: Do not treat waterfall pools as guaranteed swimming; conditions change after rain.

Skip if late: Skip after heavy rain or if you are close to missing Waiʻānapanapa.

  7. 7

    Waiʻānapanapa State Park

    reservation

    Hana / Reservation window / 60-120 min

The black-sand beach and coastal trail stop is reservation-required for non-residents.

This is the plan anchor: without a reservation, the itinerary should route around it instead of pretending you can improvise entry.

Reservation: Reserve entry and parking before arrival; non-residents pay per-person entry plus vehicle parking.

Conditions: Use ocean judgment at the beach and avoid unsafe shorebreak or posted hazards.

  8. 8

    Hāna town and Hāna Bay

    beach

Hana / Lunch to afternoon / 45-90 min

A lower-pressure town stop with county beach-park facilities, picnic space, showers, and nearby Hāna food trucks.

This is where the itinerary slows down: eat, reset, and decide whether the day ends here or extends to Kīpahulu.

Skip if late: Do not rush beyond Hāna if sunset timing, weather, or driver fatigue is already a problem.
